Since Father’s Day is just a few days away, I thought it would be nice to post five great books that I think he’ll get lots of use from. Speaking as a father (and grill master), I would truly enjoy these books, so I’m sure your hubby, father, grandfather and even great grandfather would love to dive into these as well as the great BBQ he will cook up!

1.) Mastering The Grill – What BBQ enthusiast doesn’t want to master the grill? Grilling is a science, and it’s only when you understand the science of grilling that you can transform it into an art. That’s what makes Mastering the Grill a standout on the cookbook shelf. From equipment (grill types and tools) to fire (wood, charcoal, or gas) to ingredients (meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables), the authors have shared their impressive grilling know-how to explain the whys and the hows and guarantee the wows clearly and comprehensively.

2.) BBQ USA: 425 Fiery Recipes from All Across America – Even with MegaBBQ.com on your side for innovative and traditional BBQ recipes, there’s always room for a few more. How about 425 great recipes! Here’s a review from Mr. Bobby Flay himself about BBQ USA: “Steven Raichlen’s BBQ USA is his best book yet. It is the quintessential guide to the easy and unexpected ulture of barbecue.” —Bobby Flay, author of Bobby Flay Cooks American and Boy Meets Grill

3.) Backyard BBQ: The Art of Smokology – Backyard BBQ is a excellent source for smoking meats as opposed to just a book on BBQ. McPeake opens the book by discussing different types of smokers. McPeake says bigger is not better. I would also add that more expensive is not necessarily better either as you can achieve great results with an inexpensive water smoker. No smoker? No problem. McPeake also explains how you can use your kettle grill…even your gas grill for smoking and still make great smoked BBQ. Here’s another great review from The Kansas City Star: A valuable manual for backyard cooks interested in exploring for the first time the joys of true barbecue. –Doug Worgul, The Kansas City Star
4.) Raichlen on Ribs, Ribs, Outrageous Ribs – When you think of barbeque, you think of ribs. At least I do. Ribs, Ribs Outrageous Ribs is a marriage made in BBQ heaven: America’s foremost grilling guru takes on ribs. Baby backs and spare ribs, short ribs and long ribs, pork ribs, beef ribs, lamb ribs, and more—a passionate, single-subject celebration of meaty, smoky, sweet ’n’ spicy, crowd-pleasing, fall-off-the-bone-tender ribs.
5.) Dr. BBQ’s Big-Time Barbecue Road Trip! – On one of my latest posts World’s Best BBQ Joints – Interstate Bar-B-Que of Memphis, TN, I feature one of America’s finest BBQ joints. This is a first in a series of however many it will take to cover them all, however Dr. BBQ’s Big-Time Barbecue Road Trip! features many great BBQ places. Dr. BBQ is a little ahead of me on this one.
From pork butts to brisket, New Mexico to Tennessee, Ray Lampe, A.K.A. “Dr. BBQ,†has traveled the barbecue circuit and back again—and lived to tell his tale of a never-ending barbecue road trip that practically drips with tangy goodness!
Enjoy folks and to all the dad’s out there — Have a great Father’s Day!
